Scholarly vs. Popular Publications

Scholarly journals usually follow these guidelines:

  • The word journal, archives, acta, society of, or annals appear in the title
  • Sponsoring agency is often a scholarly association, a learned society, or a research center.
  • Abstract describes the results and appears at the beginning of each article
  • Cited references appear at the end of the article.
  • Journal is indexed in scholarly rather than popular databases.
  • Many scholarly journals are “refereed” or “peer-reviewed” before they are published.
