The Internet

Before you jump onto the Internet to do your research, let's explain some basic terms that you'll run into:

What is the Internet?
The Internet is not a single resource or organization. It is a worldwide system of computer networks. This vast network of networks permits its users to exchange electronic mail, transfer files of texts, images, and sounds, and run programs on remote computers.

Is the Internet the same thing as the Web?
No, not exactly. The Web, World Wide Web or WWW is just one part of the Internet. Some forms of Internet transmissions do not always take place on the web, such as e-mail and file transfers. The Web uses hypertext, connections that allow you to link from one document to another. Links can be images or text. Text links are usually underlined and/or a special color.
