Cook Library was the proud recipient of a 2012 Towson University President's Diversity Award.
LETTER FROM THE DEAN OF UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
The rhythm of the academic year means continuous cycles of beginnings, endings, and new beginnings.
Winding down the spring semester, May is marked by completing projects, courses, research, and exams.
Countless campus celebrations signal transitions of retirement, freshmen to sophomore, sophomore to junior,
junior to senior, and that long anticipated graduation; graduation with a degree and commencement to a
new path - perhaps graduate school, first career steps, or inspiring travel. Congratulations to all of you!
Cook Library has much to celebrate too! Cook Library was awarded the TU President's Diversity Award
and selected for the Association of College and Research Libraries Rubrics for Assessing Information
Literacy Skills program. We celebrated the addition of a new librarian, Sarah Gilchrist, who is now
the Research and Instruction Librarian for Education and new roles for staff including Shannon Blackburn
becoming the Library Associate for E-Resources. Service awards went to Fred Kraus for 20 years,
Mary Gilbert for 15 years, Chris Casamassima and Lisa Woznicki for 10 years, and Shannon Blackburn,
Kay Kazinski, Matt Mickel and Debbie Nolan for five years - that's 8 people serving Towson for a total of 75 years!
Read more about our celebrations, initiatives, and staff in this issue of Cook Notes. We look forward to
providing you with library services and resources throughout the summer. In the meantime, and as always,
thank you for your support!

During the Summer, Cook Library Continues to Work for You
As the spring semester turns to summer and thoughts of vacation abound, Cook Library's staff will be hard at
work preparing for the Fall 2012 semester.

New faces at Cook Library, like that of Sarah Gilchrist (left), are always cause for celebration, but so are new roles
for those who are familiar, like Shannon Blackburn (right).
Riding the RAILS Project at Cook Library
During spring break week, while most of the Towson University campus was at
rest, a few Research and Instruction Librarians and faculty members were hard
at work as participants of the RAILS project. RAILS (Rubric Assessment of
Information Literacy Skills) is a national study funded by the Institute of
Museum and Library Services. The three-year project, which seeks to measure
college students' ability to locate, evaluate, and use information sources is
based at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies and led by
Assistant Professor Megan Oakleaf. Towson University was in the second RAILS
cohort, one of five institutions nationwide selected to participate in the
RAILS project in 2011-2012.
Cook Library by the Numbers
It has been a busy year for Cook Library! This article includes a snapshot of the resources and services that
Cook Library has provided during the last fiscal year and how these resources have benefitted the Towson community.
